Hearing ProtectionFacts and Features
Hearing protection involves more than just blocking sound. It means blocking the frequencies that can cause damage to hearing while allowing workers to communicate (when needed). It means using protection that is comfortable and convenient enough so that it will actually be worn.
Hearing protection is rated by NRR (Noise Reduction Rating), which measures the amount of attenuation (noise reduction).
• Low and medium noise environments = NRR of 22-23 • High noise environments and lond exposure to noise = NRR of 25-26 • Extremely noisy environments = NRR of 27+
Hearing protectors also come with electronics which protect hearing and still allow communication, or with built-in radio or cellular communications. Earmuffs and earplugs, both permanent and disposable, can all provide good hearing protection.
